Around two months ago, I had the opportunity to work on a Descendants of the Sun (DOTS) concept shoot. Today, I’ll like to share some tips on how to achieve the Kang Mo Yeon look!
Let’s start from the makeup (:
Below shows the before/after comparison of our lovely female lead of this shoot, Tiffany Yong!
To find out more about Tiffany, who is a talented actress & blogger, visit her website at www.tiffanyyong.com.
Below is a list of the makeup products that I used to create the look:
Primer: Stila’s One Step Correct Primer
Foundation: Mixture of Kryolan’s Dermacos Camouflage Cream Foundation (D4, D3½, D51) and Mac’s Face and Body Foundation (N1)
Concealer: Malu Wiltz’s Camouflage Cream (#3)
Eyebrow: Shu Uemura’s Brow:Sword (Seal Brown) and Tarte’s Amazonian Clay Waterproof Brow Mousse (Taupe)
Eyeliner: Stila’s Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner
Mascara: Tarte’s Lights, Camera, Splashes Waterproof Mascara
Blush: Tarte’s Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush (Blushing Bride)
Lipstick: Chanel’s Rouge Allure Velvet (42 L’Eclatante)
In the show, it is obvious that she uses Laneige’s products, but you don’t really need to get them to achieve the look. The key is getting the main points right, and you will be able to achieve the look with what you have (:
Kang Mo Yeon’s makeup is a very natural daily makeup look. I shall go into more details about how to achieve her natural radiant look in the points below.
1. Bright Radiant Skin
To get a radiant looking skin, skin care before makeup is very important. Hydrated, well exfoliated and clean skin reflect light better, thus making the skin look brighter and younger. It will also help to hold your makeup better.
Prime your face with primer that brightens the skin (those that give a nice glow/sheen). Foundation can be matte so that skin looks bright but not excessively shiny. And, it also needs to have sufficient coverage to get the flawless skin look (unless you have really good skin, then sheer-light coverage is good for you).
Note: Do not use shimmery foundation/primer.
2. Low Arch Brows
Kang Mo Yeon’s eyebrows are not super straight, so give yours a slight arch. Colour is dependant on your hair colour, it should be 1 shade lighter than your hair if your hair is dark, or 1 shade darker if your hair is light.
3. Thin Eyeliner
Kang Mo Yeon’s eyeliner is black, following her eye shape and extends slightly out of the outer corners of her eyes. You can just follow your lash line while you draw your eyeliner. Pair this with a thin coat of mascara on your lashes (:
4. Natural Flush
Kang Mo Yeon has a natural pink flush on her cheeks, so go light on your blusher. Dior’s Lip and Cheek Tint can be a good choice too.
5. Natural Bright Shade for Lips
Kang Mo Yeon’s lip colour changes throughout the show. She uses Laneige’s 2 Tone Lip Bar. It is often bright pink, natural pink, and red once in awhile. You can choose any bright colours, start from the center and just blend outwards to outer area if you do not have the 2 tone lip bar.
Once you get the above right, you are on track to perfecting your Kang Mo Yeon look!
Below are some pictures taken by AlphaSnow Photography during the video shoot.
Hairstyle
I made a collage from screen captures of the show to display the hairstyles of Kang Mo Yeon throughout the drama.
Points to take note on Kang Mo Yeon’s hairstyle are that has
Slightly airy bangs
Straight hair only curving inwards at the ends (except when she is on ‘TV show’ in the drama).
Tiffany’s hair is longer thus, I curled it a bit more at the ends.
And, for the DOTS inspired ‘wedding’ shots. I think many people have already seen the DOTS inspired shoot we did in the facebook album posted by AlphaSnow Photography. It was such a great journey from the initial stage like gown fitting till the end of the whole shoot.
Below are some looks that I created for Tiffany that suits the scenes they picked out for the shoot and also the role Song Hye Kyo is portraying. I have stated names of the hairstyle that was done below each picture.
In DOTS, Kang Mo Yeon is a doctor who is more conservative, thus makeup and hairstyles that I chose are more on the natural, simple or classy korean style.
Check out Tiffany’s post regarding this shoot here. She even did collages of the photos with the original to show which part of the show it is adapted from. And also here where she talks about the back end work done in order to make this whole shoot a success!

Hope you all have learnt a bit more about how to get the Kang Mo Yeon look. It is really a nice and simple day look that suits almost everyone, and it makes you look good without fanciful glitters and intense contouring!
